We Take Home Backup Seriously
Delivering reliable power—especially during outages—is essential. At SPAN, we intentionally evaluate every backup system we integrate with. This includes extensive performance testing and establishing direct communications between SPAN and the storage system to enable backup prioritization, system monitoring, and predictive algorithms. Today SPAN Panels are compatible with the market-leading, field-proven home battery systems in this article.
Compatible Backup Systems
SPAN Panel compatibility with backup storage systems will differ depending on the panel owned (you can identify the type of panel you have here). If a storage system is not included in the below chart, we are not currently compatible with that system.
SPAN Panel | Compatible Storage System |

When paired with a compatible backup system, the SPAN Panel allow you to set a backup priority level for each circuit in your home to extend your battery capacity. Priorities are automatically applied when the battery system tells the SPAN Panel that the utility grid is down. Priorities can be updated at any time via the SPAN Home app, including during an outage. Learn more about setting your backup priorities here: How to assign your Backup Priorities.
NOTE: Refer to the manufacturer’s Installation Manual(s) for each system below for complete installation, commissioning, and troubleshooting instructions. |
Non-Compatible Backup Systems
SPAN cannot offer technical support or guidance for installing non-compatible battery systems. Issues arising from non-compatible storage system faults may not be covered by SPAN’s warranty.
Installation restrictions with non-integrated battery systems:
- Disconnection from the utility grid must be managed by the battery storage system, upstream of the SPAN Panel. Never, in any way, attempt to use the SPAN Panel itself to manage the disconnect/reconnect of a non-integrated battery system to the utility grid.
- No automatic load management is available. All loads that exceed the rated power of the backup system must be manually managed during backup or connected outside of SPAN.
- Follow manufacturers’ guidance and local codes and standards for sizing backup loads and for approved installation methods.
Feature limitations with non-integrated battery systems:
- The SPAN Home App does not support any off-grid features for these systems. Automatic load management during outages, backup time remaining estimations, and backup priority features are not supported with these systems. During an outage, you will need to toggle Circuits off via the Home App if you wish to power them off.
- Power and energy data in the SPAN Home App may be incorrect or incomplete depending on the installation method and the battery storage system. During an outage, the SPAN Home App will continue to report all energy coming into the home as grid power.
Standby Generators
SPAN may be installed with Standby Generators in a limited capacity for SPAN Panel MAIN 32. Not sure which panel you have? Check out this article: How do I know which SPAN Panel I own?
